Homeopathy Further Explained
Homeopathy is a scientific method of treatment that is based on the application of the law of similars. This observation of the law of similars has been mentioned in the literature for thousands of years. However, it was not until 1796 that the observation of this natural law was given a name and the principles of the application of this medicine were clearly laid out. This work was done by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann (1755 – 1843). The word “homeopathy” was created by uniting two Greek roots, homoios meaning “similar” and pathos meaning “what one feels”. Homeopathy consists of treating sick people with remedies that, in crude doses, would produce in health people symptoms similar (homoios) to those of the disease needing to be overcome. For example a person may be experiencing difficulties falling asleep at night. After a complete history has been taken it is found that they constantly desire to be doing something, their mind is full of ideas and when it is time to sleep, and these ideas are repeatedly played over in the mind. They are very industrious at work, always on the go. It is also discovered that this person is very sensitive to noise, at night when they are trying to sleep even the tick of a clock keeps them awake. They are generally hot and perspire quite easily. This person who is having problems sleeping would receive a homeopathic medicine, Coffea Cruda (coffee) that when taken in large amounts produce similar symptoms in a healthy person.
Homeopathic remedies come from natural sources and are prepared in such a way that they are devoid of all chemical toxicity. In conventional medicine, drugs are generally given for their effects on the human body. In homeopathy, the medicine is given to provoke a reaction from the human body. Only the human body can heal itself, a homeopathic medicine only provokes a reaction from the body to bring about recovery. The greater the degree of similarity between the symptoms that are provoked by the remedy on a healthy person and the symptoms displayed by the person who is sick, the greater the recovery reaction will be.
With few exceptions, people affected with chronic disease do not expect their level of health to improve long term when treated with conventional medicine. However, with homeopathy, this is not the case. Homeopathic treatment directly targets the fundamental cause of the disease. The fundamental cause is the basic susceptibility of the individual to become sick. The determining factors that affect the susceptibility of each individual person can be grouped into three main categories: first, the general predisposition of the individual to be sick, determined by heredity and susceptibility acquired during life; second, the environment and all factors of stress; and third, the general hygiene or lifestyle of the person. The diseased state is an expression by the body when its susceptibility has been changed. With the most similar remedy the organism rebalances itself so the susceptibility to become sick greatly decreases.
A person afflicted by an acute disease (due to an infection, a poisoning, an accident, an emotional shock, etc.) or by a chronic disease (of a psychological, emotional or physical nature), is in a state of imbalance which is unique, creating different symptoms in each person. It is the job of the homeopath to take a complete history, carefully examining all of the symptoms and aspects of the patient and then to seek the remedy that will be the most specific for the individual in that state. In comparison, a conventional doctor does not take into account the unique symptoms that differ in each patient and thus their treatments tend to me more “one size fits all”.
It is because homeopathy is based on a law of nature that it is such a successful modality. No matter what the disease "label" (diagnosis) the patient presents with, the homeopathic treatment method is the same, and has been since it was first used. Just as the law of gravity can never be disputed, neither can the law of similars.
When homeopathy is well practice, it is the medicine of choice to recover one’s health from most acute and chronic diseases.
